I Might Have Spoken Too Soon

So, my throat is sore again.

I was doing very well, hadn’t had sore throat problems for days, and now it’s coming back. This is somewhat concerning, since I’ve been on antibiotics since Thursday night, and there was supposed to be a noticeable improvement within 24 hours.

I don’t think I’ve caught it again from somewhere, at least, I hope I haven’t. I’d hate to have to go through a second round of antibiotics to get rid of a recurring case of strep.

My energy level is somewhat less than it was yesterday as well, but I was decidedly more energetic yesterday than I’ve been in a long time. I was dozing off and on from 6:30 when I got out of bed for my back to 11:00 or so. Now that I’m awake, I’m feeling like being productive, but this sore throat is causing a tickle that’s sending me into coughing jags from time to time, the hard ones that kind of shake you for a couple minutes.

I hate feeling under the weather. I already feel kind of impotent in a way during a regular day, but tack on feeling bad on top of that and my mood tends to plummet. Fortunately, my mood seems to be fine so far. It’s not as rosy as it was yesterday, but it’s better than it’s been in the recent past.

I’m sucking on Smith Brothers’ Warm Apple Pie Warming Throat Drops. If you can find the things, they’re amazing for a sore throat, and taste fantastic. I have to be careful, since they’re basically pure sugar, but one of them every couple hours won’t be a problem. They have little droplets of cinnamon suspended in them, and the cinnamon surprisingly helps.

Can’t remember if I mentioned this, but both my wife and I have replaced our gaming drives in our laptops. I downgraded from a solid state drive to a hybrid drive, and she upgraded from a regular optical hard drive to the hybrid. Both of us are getting more space. The downside to this is that everything needs to be reinstalled, but that project, at least on my end, is going well. I should be done sometime tomorrow, I would think.

That’s about all I have for today. Sorry for the stream of consciousness post today. I’ll try to be a little more thematic tomorrow.

Medical Update, Dr. McCoy

Dammit Jim, I’m a blogger, not a doctor. (Okay, enough with the pop culture references, but I’ll give a shiny Internet cookie to the first person that can tell me the song I lifted the title of today’s post from – song title and artist, please. Bonus points if you provide a YouTube link.)

So there will be a doctor visit this afternoon at 4:00 pm. The galloping crud has started manifesting as a low-grade fever and sinus infection in my wife, and since it’s obvious we’re both suffering under the same thing, I’m riding shotgun on my wife’s visit.

My coughing fits have gotten slightly worse, and I’m at the point of coughing myself lightheaded and dizzy every time I cough, so I’m taking Delsym to try and alleviate that particular symptom. Outside of the scratchy throat and general lethargy I’m not exhibiting any other symptoms, so who knows, maybe I’ve dodged the worst of this stuff.

Sorry I’m not more talkative today, but I just want to go lie down and rest. It’s been a busy morning already.

Back Off Man, I Have Tea

Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a hardcore coffee drinker. It is not uncommon for me to drink the equivalent of a pot of coffee a day, although the majority of that is decaf, since I have sleep issues and don’t need the caffeine after a certain hour of the day. It is a very rare thing for me to drink tea as a result, and usually that’s only when I’m under the weather.

Well, I have tea.

This started out as a tickle in the throat and has evolved into a small, personal volcano that’s erupting only when I attempt to swallow and also at all other times as well, but especially when I’m trying to swallow. This has, as a result, completely knocked me on my butt. I am exhausted, I am weary, my joints ache even more than usual, and very recently this has started to manifest itself into coughing fits. (Anyone that knows me knows that I cough loud and long and hard, very frequently to the point that I’m lightheaded and feel like I’m going to pass out, which is why I try to avoid coughing while standing – I prefer not to collapse on the floor.) I’ve taken medication to try and alleviate the symptoms, but nothing is working quite like the tea and the occasional bowl of soup.

My wife thinks this is allergy related. I recently stopped taking my daily Claritin and within days this happened. Same with my wife, she stopped at the same time and she’s also suffering with a sore throat and an incessantly runny nose. The exhaustion and the joint pain has me wondering, however. Both of us have had our flu shots, so it would be unlikely that it’s the flu, but a cold isn’t out of the question, especially since we were out and social and in close proximity to a lot of our friends this weekend.

After leaving this post alone for a little while, I’ve had plenty of time for my last round of medication to kick in, and I’m feeling a little better. My wife has taken Sudafed PE and her symptoms seem to be dissipating as well, so that’s a good thing.

Here’s hoping tomorrow is better. I’m headed back to my tea.
