Today Is My Friday


Today I went to algebra in the morning and biology in the evening. I was running on two hours of sleep, and it was all I could do to get through the day, since I had a quiz that I was studying for in biology. (I wound up sleeping most of the afternoon away. Still think I did okay on the quiz. Not perfect, but passing.) This finishes my need to leave the house for the rest of the week. There’s no plans for the weekend, save for my radio show tomorrow evening and the show I do with my wife on Saturday evening. I’m in until Monday morning, and while I do have some homework to do during those four days, I can take it easy the rest of the time.

Which is good, because I think I’m coming down with a cold.

My nose is stuffy and I have this terrible scratch in my throat that’s accompanied by a near-constant urge to cough. We thought it was allergies because I went several days without my allergy medicine, but I’ve been back on it for a couple days now and things seem to be getting slightly worse instead of better.

I am self-prescribing bed rest for as much of tomorrow as I can to try and catch up a little bit on the sleep issue. I’ve been getting somewhere around 5-6 hours of sleep a night for the past several days, and that starts to show eventually. Besides, rest will do the cold good.

Speaking of rest, I should head that way now.


Donuts Make Things Better


This morning we woke up rather early (for a Saturday) and decided that donuts would be an appropriate breakfast for a diabetic, so we drove to Round Rock Donuts (home of the best glazed donut I’ve ever had) and got a dozen donuts, a dozen donut holes (for the ride home) and two klobasniky, one with sausage and one with sausage and cheese. (A klobasnek is like a pig in a blanket: a meat, usually sausage, sometimes with cheese, wrapped in dough and baked. They’re very popular here in Texas, where there’s a large Czech population. Klobasniky are very frequently called kolaches, which is actually very similar to a danish, dough topped with fruit. Both are extremely tasty.) My wife and I split the donut holes between us, ate our respective klobasniky, and went to her office to sign her time card for the week. The rest of the day was spent either goofing off on Facebook and the Internet in general, napping, or preparing our playlist for the evening’s special show (one of the guilds in a game that we play requested our presence for an anniversary event tonight). It’s been a pretty low-key day.

A Day of Leisure


Today has been spent playing computer games and napping. I figured after running completely out of spoons yesterday, I was entitled to be lazy today. I was a little too lazy this morning and forgot a timely item on my checklist, so my latest streak ends at 12 days, but I’m trying to get everything else done on my checklist today. This blog post is the last thing.

The morning was spent playing Civilization V with my wife, and then this evening we’ve been on a Skype call with a friend of ours and starting out in Stardew Valley. It’s a cute little game, 16-bit graphics but entertaining. It’s been a good evening.

Tomorrow I have several things on my to-do list so it’s good that I spent today catching up on the spoons.



I’m currently reading The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook, Sixth Edition from Edmund J. Bourne, PhD, and in the chapter on relaxation I’m up to the part on downtime, which befuddles me a little bit, given my current situation.

The book describes it like this:

Downtime is exactly what it sounds like – time out from work or other responsibilities to give yourself an opportunity to rest and replenish your energy.

The book goes on to recommend that the reader give him or herself one hour of downtime per day, one day of downtime per week, and one week of downtime every twelve to sixteen weeks. Makes perfect sense for someone that’s constantly on the go between work and home responsibilities, on top of trying to maintain a hobby or two and a series of friendships.

But here’s the thing – I’m on disability. I don’t really have any other responsibilities except for my daily checklist, and most of the items on that are things that I have to do daily – monitor my vitals, take medication, eat at regular intervals, that sort of thing. Not only that, two of the items on that checklist are designed to keep me from obsessing over productivity here in the house – leisure and socialization. But eliminating the non-essential, non-downtime oriented items from my checklist only takes five items off the list – reading, learning, writing, my daily list of non-recurring to-do items, and exercise. One of those, learning, I have an ongoing streak of over 200 days that I really don’t want to break, and now that I’m nearing 60 days of getting full marks on my entire checklist I’m really disinclined to take a break from any of it for a week or even a day. On top of that, there’s really not that much involved with doing those few non-essential items that it really interferes with my ability to relax.

The book goes on to state that there are three different types of downtime: rest time, where you “set aside all activities and just allow yourself to be;” recreation time, where you engage in “activities that help to ‘re-create’ you, or serve to replenish your energy;” and relationship time, where you “put aside your private goals and responsibilities in order to enjoy being with another person.” This part makes sense – it’s a balance of all three types that help promote true relaxation, which is the goal of downtime.

Now, once I go back to school in the fall, all bets on my ability to maintain my checklist and school and downtime are off. I’ll just have to see what happens when the time comes. But for now, downtime is pretty much my life, and I’m thankful for it, even though it’s pretty boring on a daily basis.
